Pagham-on-Sea Short Stories

I've written a lot of short stories for members which appear in the eBook collections, and as standalones to download in my shop. Here is the list in chronological order for those who want to read them like that, as they may not be published in this way. Some are Monstrous May or A Scare A Day short stories, and these are not included in the Ko-Fi Letter Collections.

1800s

  • The Monster’s Teeth – 1870s set. Dicky Pendle finds his master’s teeth collection in the Big House.

  • The Smeech Man – 1870s/1880s. A teenage Beverley Pendle learns dark magic to torment boys she doesn’t like, and her cousin Dicky gets the better of her (this time), with tragic results.

  • It Came from the Amber – 1880s. The beginning of the Pendle sisters’ descent into weird, betentacled darkness. An archaeological dig on Sauvant land goes wrong.

  • Green Dreams – 1880s. The results of her strange insect encounter leaves Beverley with some odd dreams and strange thoughts.

  • A folktale collected in 1899: The Knucker of Pidding Woods - this is not included in the collection The Folklore of Pagham-on-Sea Vol 1.

1900s-1910s

  • The Poetry of Betrayal, an early draft of the sapphic witchy schoolgirls backstory for Eglantine Pritchard, set 1904-1912, is available as a free download for members.

  • Olive Shaw and Cpt. Moon – #AScareADay short, inspired by the challenge story, ‘The Last House in C____ Street’ (1856) by Dinah Mulock. Olive Shaw has a visitation from Cpt. John Moon at their usual teashop.

  • Let Them Go – letter from WW1 field hospital introducing Egg Pritchard aged 19, and her powers.

  • Strange Impressions – letter from WW1 field hospital introducing Gwen “Moss” Mostyn-Jenkins and her powers, and a strange Flemish folktale.

  • Woman In White – letter from WW1 field hospital, in which Egg Pritchard is on Gwen’s case, and weird things are happening.

  • A Special Night (Part 1) – letter from WW1 field hospital, in which the narrator overhears some revelations and drama ensues.

  • A Special Night (Part 2) - letter from the WW1 field hospital, in which the adventure is concluded.

1920s-1930s

1940s-1960s

1970s-2020s

  • Trapped (1973) - written for Monstrous May 2023, this is a short piece set in Quatre Faces, Pagham-on-Sea.

  • Midnight at the Crazy Golf - a prose poem attempt, describing the late-night scenes at the 24hr crazy golf on the seafront.

  • Interview with a Vampire - an interview with a vampire from Pagham-on-Sea.

  • Feeding Time - hardshell merfolk at Unger Point find their next meal.

  • The Cave - hardshell merfolk find a man to fill with eggs, but not in the fun way.

  • The Doppelganger - a strange murder investigation, Pagham-on-Sea, 2006.

  • The Sussex Fretsaw Massacre & Other Stories contains stories from Ricky Porter's childhood and adolescence, during the early 2000s-2010s.

  • Nymph - 2010s set take on vagina dentata, and why you should be wary of one night stands in Pagham-on-Sea.

  • The Condemnation of Starling Lane - a late 2010s set story about a sinister row of terraced houses in Pagham-on-Sea, and what happened there.

  • A Dark Place of One's Own - the darker companion to The Sound of Darkness, which may be released on its own as a short.

  • Ascension - the ascension of Ricky Porter, chronologically between The Crows and Thirteenth. Experimental writing.

  • Ricky/Carrie - Experimental writing following Ricky's Ascension, set between The Crows and Thirteenth.

  • The first five original chapters of Thirteenth (~28K of content), scrapped when the novel timeline shifted, as I couldn’t make these line up with a midpoint that worked or build to a climax that worked, and I didn’t like the first chapter as an opening.

  • Deleted Scene 01 from The Day We Ate Grandad (5.5K) is available for all supporters, one-off and monthly.

  • Deleted Scene 02 from The Day We Ate Grandad (5.1K) is available for all supporters, one-off and monthly.

  • The short story “Dinner For Two” is more a slice of life scene set after The Sussex Fretsaw Massacre, in which Olly cooks for Ricky.

  • The Flower Show 2021 - Mason Hawthorne reports on the annual Pagham-on-Sea Flower Show.

  • An Exile Returns is a short story set after The Day We Ate Grandad, first person from an unnamed family member hoping to return after being born in exile.

  • Ricky and the Bards is an experimental piece about Ricky finding his own words of power in the Otherworld. Not related to anything; an experimental piece.
